The top 6 reasons for never skipping leg day

We’ve all heard it before, “don’t skip leg day!”

(Here’s a great workout to make sure you blast those thighs even while traveling.)

But what’s the importance of leg day? I’m going to make it simple upfront: if you want to shred fat in the fastest time possible, you MUST target and exercise your legs every week.

EVERY WEEK.

I’m not kidding here folks. It’s THAT important. To put it in perspective, your legs are your biggest muscle group on your body so it only makes sense that you work those out.

Not to mention if you miss leg day, you’ll come out looking as yoked as Ronnie Coleman in his prime while also having obvious Ethiopian marathon runner spaghetti legs.

To me, skipping leg day is like the equivalent of only painting the front of a house.

And, unfortunately, I knew of a guy who “only painted the front of his house.”

My friend could do some impressive stuff

I had a friend I lifted with for a few years. Ripped guy. Body fat didn’t seem to exist on this guy. His lifts were solid. He could rep 225 on the bench and overhead press 165 several times.

He also had one of the strongest cores I’ve ever seen. The human flag pole was no problem for him. Performing hanging windshield wipers was as easy as tying a shoe for this guy. We used to watch in wonder at some of the things he could. He was that good!

He had one problem though….

The reason these exercises were so easy for him was the fact that he had the tiniest legs.

Seriously, ducks have more definition on their legs than this guy did.

And he came up with more excuses to avoid leg day than a nun prays on Sundays.

“I have homework”
“The girlfriend is making lasagna”
“I would, but I don’t feel like it”
“I’m tired”
“My car is blocked in”

The list goes on and on. I swear I could write a better book of excuses from him alone than from working with my clients. Like I said, I just expected it.

His laziness got to the point that I didn’t even ask if he was going to join me for leg day anymore, so I went at it alone each week. I just couldn’t skip leg day. The benefits far outweighed the extra blood, sweat and tears.

And I actually looked proportional unlike my lifting partner.

So why was I never caught skipping leg day? Here’s my top 6 reasons for never skipping leg day:

1. Hitting your legs help you blast fat FAST

Your legs are some of the strongest (and largest) muscles in your body so when you exercise them, they require more energy to keep them running 100%. This means more calories burned.

And more calories burned means that as long as you’re eating less calories than you need on any given day, you’re going to lose weight.

My recommended exercises to target your legs are squats and deadlifts.

2. It helps you build muscle FASTER

When you’re squatting heavy, your body is going to release a ridiculous amount of testosterone and human growth hormone, both of which build muscle quickly.

(Ladies, don’t be intimidated by this one. You have 1/20th the amount of testosterone as men so you can’t get crazy muscular. Think Michelle Obama’s arms, but for your legs.)

3. They improve your athleticism the FASTEST

Want to get back into your prime? You know, when you had cat-like reflexes?

Because you’re activating your entire posterior chain you’re inevitably improving your balance, flexibility and mobility. Which in turn will help you in general as you go through life.

4. You won’t have to do crunches anymore

In order for you to perform leg exercises, your body must use your core to keep your balance. So while it doesn’t directly hit your core it definitely indirectly does.

Now I still recommend doing sit-ups and crunching exercises as a targeting exercise for your core but doing your leg exercises will help you not worry about performing those exercises if you’re low on time.

5. You’ll get that nice, tight ass you’ve been dreaming about

Oh yeah, I went there.

Don’t be hypocritical of me — how else can you expect to firm up that tush if you’re not activating your leg muscles? And guys, women like a nice butt too.

I recommend that at the top of your squat or deadlift that you squeeze your butt cheeks as if you were trying to hold a penny in between them. This will fully engage and activate all of your butt’s muscles.

6. It’ll improve your sex life

When you get that feeling, all you want is sexual healing, right?

With all of the hip flexion that you’ll be performing while you’re squatting and deadlifting, your performance in bed will be much more powerful. Even your orgasms.

And if that isn’t enough to get you to squat, I don’t know what else could motivate you.

Some final notes

These are just some of the reasons why I don’t skip leg day. Also, I really love leg day.

Yeah your legs will almost always be extremely sore the following 3 days, but that’s a sign that you’re on the right track. And the only way to get rid of that soreness, of course, is to hit your legs again.

Embrace the burn! It means you’ve worked hard and you’re getting stronger!

So get underneath that barbell and get to squatting. You’ll not only get improve your sex life, you’ll also start blasting fat fast.
